American River College Children'S Center

Overview

The Child Development Center delivers education and care for young children of student-parents, college staff, and community families while functioning as an instructional laboratory for students preparing to work in early childhood education.

Approach and curriculum

The center follows an emergent, child-initiated curriculum influenced by Reggio Emilia principles, emphasizing open-ended exploration, documentation of learning, and constructivist classroom practices. Staff focus on intentional teaching, social–emotional development, and anti-bias work, and create environments and materials intended to reflect children’s cultures and interests.

Lab school and family engagement

The center serves as a practicum site that offers hands-on opportunities for students from early childhood education and related programs to work with children under mentor guidance.
Families are treated as partners; the program describes an open-door policy, regular family workshops, and invitations for families to share cultural resources and participate in classroom life.
