Anderson School (The)

Overview

The Anderson School (PS 334) is a New York City public K-8 school established to provide an accelerated and enriched program for intellectually gifted students. The school serves students from across the city and is housed on the first two floors of the William J. O’Shea Campus at the corner of W. 77th Street and Columbus Avenue. Classes are organized with a smaller enrollment and typically two classes per grade.

Academics and curriculum

The curriculum is aligned with New York City and State standards and combines accelerated and enriched instruction across subject areas. Instruction emphasizes higher-level thinking, creative problem solving, research, and both independent and collaborative project work, alongside development of social and communication skills.

Language arts: Reading and writers’ workshop formats, a range of literary genres, and use of leveled reading systems.
Mathematics: Skill-based program with accelerated materials and use of Everyday Math, Singapore Math, and additional modules; middle school offerings include Regents Integrated Algebra.
Science: Inquiry- and hands-on investigation across grades K–8, use of F.O.S.S. kits, and a Regents-level Living Environment course in 8th grade.
Social studies: Interdisciplinary study in elementary grades and grade-specific World and American history sequences in middle school with emphasis on research and presentations.
World language: Spanish exposure in K–4 and formal Spanish instruction beginning in Grade 5, with middle school pathways that can include preparation for state proficiency exams.
Arts, music and technology: Studio art experiences, a multi-level music program with instrumental instruction and ensembles, and access to iPads (grades 2–5), Chromebooks (grades 6–8), classroom computers and a library media center.
Physical education: Licensed P.E. instruction for K–8 and a middle-school fitness room.

Enrichments, extracurriculars and logistics

Students have access to a variety of enrichment and extracurricular offerings that vary by grade. Examples include chess for early grades; Lego Robotics; enrichment clusters on rotating topics; a fifth-grade year-long law program; NYSSMA music assessments; debate, math and science teams; Math Counts participation for middle grades; and community service projects in Grade 8.

Transportation eligibility is determined by the New York City Department of Education Office of Pupil Transportation; eligible students may receive yellow-bus service or a full-fare MetroCard based on grade level and the distance between home and school. Citywide gifted-school busing eligibility follows the same borough-and-distance criteria used for general-education students.
