Applications And Research Laboratory

Overview

Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) serves as the district’s centralized career and technical education center for high school students. The site offers multi-year career academy programs and accepts students from the county’s high schools, including Homewood School.

Programs and instruction

Career academies are organized as two-year programs beginning in 11th grade and focus on career preparation through applied learning.
Instruction uses project-based learning and industry-standard software and technology.
Programs include opportunities to earn industry certifications and college credit while enrolled in ARL courses.
Business partnerships and advisory boards are integrated into program design and student experiences.

Enrollment and student services

Students request ARL courses during their regular high school registration window; alternate course choices are an option. When requests exceed available seats, a randomized computerized process is used for placement and a waitlist is generated. Waitlisted students may be offered seats if openings occur prior to the school year. Transportation between home schools and the center is managed by the district, with limited options for driving or parking only when a district permit is approved.
