Overview

Arthur Middleton Elementary School is an elementary campus in the Charles County Public Schools system. It offers early childhood programming and elementary instruction and serves as the district site for a developing dual language, two‑way immersion program.

Dual language program

The school opened a dual language, two‑way immersion program in the 2024–2025 school year for prekindergarten and kindergarten and added first grade in 2025–2026. All classrooms in the participating grades (preK–grade 1 as of 2025–2026) take part in the bilingual program. Each year the program adds the next grade level with the goal of including all elementary grades by school year 2029–2030.

50/50 model: students spend half the day with a Spanish‑speaking teacher and half the day with an English‑speaking teacher.
All core subjects (Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) are taught in both Spanish and English; the language assigned to a subject remains consistent for a full school year.
Program length: the two‑way immersion model runs a minimum of six years (kindergarten through grade 5); prekindergarten participation is intended to provide a seven‑year sequence of bilingual instruction.
Three program goals identified for dual language instruction are high academic achievement, bilingualism and biliteracy, and socio‑cultural competence.

Academics and district policy

Instruction in the dual language program covers the district's core content areas in both languages. Enrollment and placement in the dual language program are governed by Superintendent's Rule 5128 for dual language enrollment. The program has also been documented in district video segments that illustrate classroom structure and student experiences.
