Barnette Academy

Overview

Barnette Academy is a full‑day daycare and preschool serving infants through pre‑kindergarten. The centre enrolls children age 6 weeks to 5 years and serves families from Bucktown and nearby neighbourhoods.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses a whole‑child, play‑based approach and an emergent curriculum. Teachers observe children’s interests and skill levels and plan activities and projects that grow from those observations, giving children an active role in their learning.

Classrooms and facilities

Age‑grouped classrooms include Infant, Wobbler, Toddler, Preschool and Pre‑K rooms, each with dedicated learning areas such as reading corners, art and dramatic‑play spaces, and writing centers.
Facilities noted across classrooms include skylights with retractable blinds, child‑size bathrooms connected to toddler/preschool/pre‑K rooms, designated gross‑motor areas and a central atrium feature wall.
Program includes neighborhood outings and seasonal outdoor activities such as water days at local parks and walks along the 606.

Meals and daily routine

Meals are provided through a partnership with an external vendor that supplies lunch and two snacks daily, served at age‑appropriate tables and chairs. Classrooms are arranged with separate spaces for feeding, sleeping, diapering and play for younger children.
