Cal Poly Child Care Center

Overview

The Cal Poly Pomona Children’s Center is an early care and education program operated jointly by Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) and Cal Poly Pomona. The center enrolls children aged 18 months through 5 years and is licensed by the California Department of Social Services; the center is licensed to serve 71 children. Enrollment priority is given to CPP students, then staff, faculty, alumni, and community members in that order. Children with special needs are accepted and children are not required to be potty trained to enroll.

Approach and curriculum

The center uses an emergent curriculum that builds daily routines and lesson plans around children’s interests and developmental stages. Teaching staff plan both teacher-led and child-initiated activities and use Infant-Toddler and Preschool foundations and frameworks as resources. An outdoor curriculum guides staff in integrating nature and outdoor play into learning.

Meals, health and policies

The center provides breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack that follow CACFP nutrition guidelines and operates as a nut-free facility.
Illness and medication policies require children to be well enough to participate in activities; children with fever (101°+), vomiting/diarrhea, or certain contagious illnesses are sent home and must be fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication before returning. Medications require pharmacy labeling and a signed consent form.
Typical classroom routines include large-group, small-group, and free-choice work time, with both indoor and outdoor activities each day.
