The lab school supports undergraduate and graduate learning, faculty research, and community observation while hosting both naturalistic observation and voluntary, approved research projects. The program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is a certified Nature Explore Classroom.
Teachers use a flexible, inquiry-based curriculum framework that balances child-initiated exploration and developmentally appropriate teacher-initiated activities. The program emphasizes observation, planning, implementation, documentation, and reflection; families are engaged as partners. Assessment uses naturalistic observation, work samples, photo documentation, anecdotal records, and learning stories.
Classrooms and outdoor areas are designed for clear sight and sound supervision and include distinct learning areas and outdoor play as an integral part of the environment. Materials are selected to promote all domains of development and are frequently changed to reflect curriculum content. Children are grouped by developmental stage into stable cohorts for the school year. Children’s classes follow the UC Davis academic-year calendar and the lab school does not operate during the summer term.
Professional staff include program coordinators and lead teachers with bachelor’s or master’s level preparation; classrooms are supplemented by apprentice teachers and supervised undergraduate practicum students. The ECLS functions as a research laboratory: naturalistic observation is conducted regularly, and research involving more than observation proceeds only with specific parental permission and institutional review approval.
