Child Development Laboratory

Overview

Child Development Laboratory is a university-linked early childhood centre that serves infants, toddlers and prekindergarten children. It operates as part of a regional early childhood partnership involving public school districts, the Illinois State Board of Education and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Programs and services

Prevention Initiative (0-3) Program — Offers two options: a classroom-based option at the laboratory that emphasizes parent involvement and child development for infants and toddlers, and a home-based option that provides weekly visits and community group experiences.
Preschool for All Prekindergarten Program (3-5) — Provides developmentally appropriate classroom learning and personal visits for three- to five-year-olds; half-day and full-day programs are offered in public school classrooms and at the laboratory.
Parental Training Program (3-5) — Supports parents and caregivers in their role as their child’s first teacher and offers resources to families while assisting prekindergarten teachers.

Eligibility and partnerships

Participation in the preschool program is determined through a Play-Based Developmental Screening along with a family questionnaire, home-language survey and income verification. The laboratory participates in grant-funded regional initiatives serving families in several southern Illinois counties.
