Child Study Lab - Psychology Department - Asu

Overview

The Child Study Lab is a university-based preschool founded in 1972 and operated by the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. It serves children aged 15 months to 5 years and is located on the first floor of the Psychology Building on ASU's Tempe campus. The Lab functions as an educational program for young children while also providing training and supervised practicum opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students and opportunities for voluntary research participation.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses a developmentally appropriate curriculum that combines the Arizona Early Learning Standards with an emergent curriculum and treats play as a primary medium for development. Curriculum content integrates cognitive, social–emotional, physical and language development and includes literacy, math, science, fine arts, social studies, and health and safety.

Staff, ratios and family involvement

Classes are led by experienced professional teachers supported by multiple undergraduate assistants; the site reports an average adult–child ratio of one teacher per four children. Parents are encouraged to observe, visit, and participate in snack times; parent conferences are offered twice yearly and the program hosts family social and educational events.
