Childrens 2nd Language Academy

Overview

Children's 2nd Language Academy operates an early education program for children aged 2–6 and an afterschool program for children aged 5–12. The program opened in 2003 and offers an online e-learning option for students who are at home or not local.

Curriculum and classroom approach

The program describes an advanced curriculum with an emphasis on math and reading. Individual learning plans are created for each child and instruction combines direct teaching, small-group work and one-on-one tutoring. Four- and five-year-old students receive reading and writing instruction, weekly vocabulary checks and daily homework activities.

Languages, staff and features

Instruction is provided in English, French and Spanish.
Leadership and staff are multilingual; the director and assistant director speak multiple languages and staff are described as bilingual (Portuguese, French, Spanish).
Class sizes are kept small and the program highlights varied instruction and targeted support for each child.

Health, safety and operations

The program posts COVID-19 guidance that includes limits on classroom occupancy, designated restrooms per group, isolation procedures for ill children, routine health screening on arrival, and frequent cleaning and disinfection of classrooms, restrooms and commonly touched surfaces. The guidance also notes that playground use is limited to one small group at a time and that sleeping cots are spaced apart.
