Children'S Workshop Oakland, The

Overview

The Children’s Workshop Oakland is a small, full-day Reggio-inspired toddler and preschool program located in the Grand Lake / Lake Merritt neighborhood of Oakland. The program operates year-round from an historic Queen Anne Victorian home and enrolls a small community of students and teachers.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses a play- and project-based, Reggio-inspired emergent curriculum with an emphasis on inquiry, responsive language, anti-bias and antiracist pedagogies. Learning is organized around sensory exploration, art, maker work, math, science and child-centered project work, with teachers acting as facilitative co-learners and documenters of children’s investigations.

Facilities and learning environment

Indoor and outdoor learning areas include multiple light-filled classrooms, art and studio spaces, cozy reading corners and outdoor green spaces. Classrooms are used to support extended project work, free play and a mix of small- and large-group activities.

Meals, toileting and staff development

Meals and snacks are served family-style with an emphasis on balanced, protein-rich food and fresh produce where possible.
Toilet training is not required; teachers provide regular, teacher-facilitated opportunities to practice toileting at school.
The program serves as a California Early Childhood Mentor Program teacher mentoring campus and focuses on credentialing, apprenticeship and training for early childhood educators.
