Children'S Workshop Oakland, The

Overview

The Children’s Workshop Oakland is a small, inclusive early childhood program that emphasizes collaborative, child-centered learning. The program operates from an historic Queen Anne Victorian home and maintains an intimate campus with multiple indoor and outdoor learning areas and a small staff community.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses Reggio-inspired, play- and project-based, anti-bias and antiracist pedagogies to support emergent, inquiry-driven learning. Teachers use responsive language and documentation to support children’s investigations and to scaffold social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. The campus also serves as a mentoring and training site for early childhood educators.

Facilities, meals and daily life

Indoor and outdoor classroom spaces designed for self-guided exploration and collaborative project work, including indoor art areas, reading corners and building/design spaces.
Multiple outdoor green spaces that are used regularly as extensions of the classroom.
Meals and snacks are served family style with an emphasis on balanced, protein-rich options and fresh produce; the program describes efforts to source foods produced without pesticides and animal products free from growth hormones and unnecessary additives.
Toileting support is provided; children are not required to be toilet trained prior to attendance.
