Overview

Community Nursery School is a cooperative, non-profit preschool that follows a Reggio Emilia–inspired, developmental and constructivist approach. The program emphasizes play, investigation, creativity, and community participation as central to young children’s learning.

Approach and curriculum

The daily rhythm includes opportunities for choice, studio-based art and material exploration, group investigations, meeting time, story, snack, music, movement, and regular outdoor exploration. Teachers observe and extend children’s interests through provocations and materials, and documentation is used to make learning visible to the community.

Facilities, outdoor space, and community

The facility includes three classrooms, a library, a studio, a kitchen, a faculty resource room, and administrative offices.
The outdoor campus features grassy hills, climbing and swinging areas, sand play, a fenced garden studio, a mud kitchen, a water pump, a tree stump garden, a woodland trail, and other nature-based play elements that are used as extensions of indoor learning.
Families are involved through parent participation in classrooms and through community traditions and events that bring together children, families, and staff.

Staff and training

Classroom educators are certified by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, are trained in CPR and First Aid, participate in ongoing professional development, and include staff with advanced degrees. The school’s team structure includes classroom teachers, administrative staff, and specialists who support inclusion and enrichment.
