Overview

Cooperative Nursery School of Champaign-Urbana is a nonprofit, parent-operated nursery school that organizes part-time preschool classes with professional teachers assisted by participating parents. Enrollment spans early childhood programs including infant/ toddler offerings and preschool classes up to four- and five-year-old groups. Potty training is not required for attendance.

Approach and curriculum

The program combines child-initiated play and teacher-directed activities, using the Creative Curriculum and an approach to social–emotional learning based on Conscious Discipline. Stated goals include emotional and social development, physical and aesthetic growth, and cognitive development through materials exploration, group interaction, planning and problem solving. Nutritional snacks are provided during class sessions.

Classes, parent participation and governance

Classes meet on a part-time, morning schedule and are organized as member groups of parents and teachers. Parents are required to assist in classrooms on scheduled days and to participate in meetings and school work; specific parent-service roles include assisting in class sessions and scheduled cleaning duties. The school is governed by a Board of Directors and operates under adopted by-laws that detail membership obligations, committee structure and administrative roles.
