C.S.U.N. Preschool Child & Family Studies Center

Overview

The Child & Family Studies Center is a laboratory early childhood program operated by California State University, Northridge. It serves community children while functioning as an instructional unit and research site to support university students, faculty, and professional development.

Approach and curriculum

The program emphasizes active, developmentally appropriate learning that encourages self-directed exploration and discovery. Classroom practice uses recognized early childhood curricula and frameworks, and staff focus on supporting cognitive, social-emotional, physical and creative development.

Facilities and services

Classrooms equipped for observation with one-way mirrors and audio equipment to permit observation by students, parents, faculty and staff.
Collaboration with an inclusion program that provides special education and related therapy services in the classroom setting.
Functions as a site for faculty- and student-led research, subject to university human-subjects review.
Licensed by the State of California Department of Social Services (Title XXII) and maintains periodic accreditation through the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs; lead teachers meet state coursework requirements in early childhood education, child development and/or education.
