Cyert Center For Early Education

Overview

The Cyert Center for Early Education is a full-time child care and education program affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University. The program serves children from 12 weeks of age through kindergarten and enrolls children of current CMU faculty, staff, and students as well as alumni and members of the broader Pittsburgh community.

Educational approach

The program is informed by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and describes itself as a social constructivist, developmentally appropriate program. Classroom practice emphasizes emergent curriculum, collaborative problem solving between children and educators, small-group work driven by children’s interests, and multiple expressive media (for example, clay, paint, drama, music and graphic arts).

Program operations and professional learning

Meals and snacks are provided and prepared by on-site kitchen staff.
Daily routines include small-group time, mixed-age activities, outdoor exploration and quiet time.
Educators participate in ongoing professional development and follow developmentally appropriate practice and the NAEYC code of ethics.
The center offers professional exchanges such as tours, student observation opportunities, and an annual visitation day for early childhood educators and students.

The program is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children; the Morewood site’s kindergarten is also licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
