Overview

Discovery School is a nonprofit early childhood and elementary program offering weekday, academic-year classes for children starting at age two and continuing through early elementary grades. The school operates as a parent-governed organization and maintains a scholarship program to support family affordability.

Approach & Curriculum

The program emphasizes play-based, developmentally appropriate learning organized around thematic unit studies. Curricula address social-emotional, communication, literacy, mathematics, science, fine and gross motor development, and technology. Instructional resources and methods referenced include Handwriting Without Tears, Spalding Phonics, Science of Reading, Daily 5 Reading and Math, LiPS, and Math Their Way. Frequent field trips and special guests tied to unit studies, plus resource classes and extracurricular enrichment such as Spanish, music, motor skills, and science experiences.
Governance by a volunteer parent board and community-focused events (for example, a fall carnival and spring benefit) that support programming and scholarships.

Programs

First Grade

First Grade combines thematic unit studies, collaborative projects, hands-on centers, and guided instruction across reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, alongside specialized resource classes such as Spanish, music, motor skills, and a science lab.

Kindergarten Program

The Kindergarten program blends hands-on learning with whole-group, small-group, and center-based work to develop literacy and math foundations, using strategies aligned with the Science of Reading, LiPS, and other research-based practices.

Pre-Kindergarten Program

The Four-Year-Old (Pre-K) curriculum combines unit studies with a Letter Study and literacy-focused activities using Handwriting Without Tears and other literacy strategies, alongside math, science, art, and field experiences; some center activities are required for assessment and skill development.

2-, 3-, or 5-day a week program options

Three-Year-Old Program

The Three-Year-Old curriculum covers all developmental domains through two-week units of study, a mix of large- and small-group work, independent play, thematic projects, and leveled learning center activities that can be adapted to individual needs.
