Overview

Effingham Child Development Center provides care and education for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children. Services are structured to support children with a range of abilities in an inclusive setting and to promote interpersonal, social and developmental skills.

Approach and staffing

The program uses a specialized curriculum, maintains low teacher/child ratios, and arranges contracted therapy services for children who need them. Staff participate in ongoing professional development and the center offers in-service training opportunities that include CPR and first aid and USDA food program training.

Programs and daily routines

Infants (6 weeks to 15 months) — Care for very young children with routines for feeding, diapering and rest; parents are asked to supply items such as formula, bottles, diapers and a change of clothes.
Toddlers - Preschool (15 months to 6 years) — Developmental activities and age-appropriate routines, including designated naptime for younger groups; parents are asked to provide clothing and basic supplies as listed by the center.
School-Age (Kindergarten to 12 years) — Before- and after-school and school-break care for older children with activities and supervision suited to school-aged needs.

Community partnerships and supports

Works with local agencies for screenings, referrals and therapies (including Birth to Three, Early Head Start and special education programs).
Participates in job-mentoring and workforce training programs for students and young adults interested in early childhood careers.
Coordinates with community resources for family assistance, food and clothing pantries and other social-service referrals.
