Family Developmental Center (Infant)

Overview

Family Developmental Center is part of Felton Institute’s Early Care & Education programs that serve families in San Francisco. The center enrolls children from birth through early childhood and is listed among Felton’s neighborhood centers.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses research-aligned assessment tools and a play-based curriculum framework, with staff trained to adapt activities to children’s developmental needs and cultural context. Instruction emphasizes social, emotional, physical and cognitive development through hands-on experiences, small- and large-group activities, and repetition to support learning.

Inclusion, primary-care model and ratios

Services are provided in inclusive classrooms with accommodations and early intervention support as needed.
A primary-care teacher model is used to assign primary responsibility for each child’s care and learning.
Felton reports staffing ratios for its ECE programs (examples across the program): infants (birth–18 months) and toddlers (18–36 months) through preschool-age groups, with smaller group sizes for younger children.

Family involvement, meals and assessment

Families are expected to participate in intake and regular family/teacher conferences and other activities that support partnership in a child’s learning. Meals and snacks are provided through a central kitchen program that aims to offer nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks. Developmental screening and assessment tools are used to monitor progress and identify needs for early intervention.
