Family School Cdc Bernal Gateway, The

Overview

The Bernal Gateway site is a community-based, non-profit child development center that serves children from four months through five years and has capacity for 32 children. The program is described as developmentally appropriate and aims to support cognitive, sensory-motor and social development.

Approach and curriculum

The center uses a play-based, sensory-motor approach that emphasizes attachment, child-initiated exploration and culturally appropriate practices. Staff plan learning experiences and developmental assessments to meet individual needs and to prepare children for the transition to kindergarten.

Facilities and activities

Indoor and outdoor learning areas with activities in language, art, dramatic play, music and gross motor development
A large outdoor play area with playground equipment, ride-on toys, water and sand tables, balls and chalk; neighborhood walks and field trips are part of activity options
Enrichment offerings include science/nature sessions and weekly music activities; the center also hosts family potlucks

Health, nutrition and safety

Participation in the Child Care Food Program; meals are provided by an outside vendor and served by staff, with infant feeding plans individualized
Annual vision, dental and hearing screenings and weekly visits from a school psychologist; referrals made as needed
Staff trained in First Aid and CPR, first aid kits in classrooms, posted evacuation procedures, regular fire and earthquake drills, exclusion and medication policies in place
