First Friends Preschool

Overview

First Friends Montessori is a private Montessori school for young children, operating year-round. The program serves children in the toddler, preschool and kindergarten age ranges and emphasizes hands-on, child-centered learning.

Approach and curriculum

The center uses Montessori methods with classroom areas that include Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, Zoology, Botany and Cultural Studies. Classrooms are arranged to support multi-age learning and uninterrupted work periods to promote independence, concentration and coordination.

Gardens and enrichment

Gardening and botany are integrated into the program through on-site herb, flower, vegetable and berry gardens. The school hosts seasonal farmer’s markets and involves children in growing and making items related to those projects.

Staff, health and operations

The director and teaching staff hold early childhood qualifications, CPR/First Aid training, and participate in ongoing professional development; teachers are fingerprinted and background-checked.
Snacks are provided by the school; parents supply each child’s lunch. Rest periods follow lunch for toddler and preschool groups.
The program maintains written policies on illness, medication, emergency consent and required admission paperwork, and is licensed by the California Department of Social Services (License #093603186).
