First United Methodist Day Care Center

Overview

First United Methodist Day Care Center is a full-time child care program located in downtown Champaign. The center is licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, serves approximately 100 families, and employs a director and roughly 30 staff, with support staff that include a nurse, cook, custodian and office personnel.

Approach and curriculum

The program follows a developmentally appropriate, play-based approach that balances teacher-directed and child-initiated activities. The Creative Curriculum is used for planning learning experiences, and Teaching Strategies GOLD is used for ongoing assessment and documentation.

Care, facilities and policies

Accepts children ages six weeks through six years.
On-site services include meals, disposable diapers, wipes and infant formula; parents provide extra clothing and may provide alternative infant foods if preferred.
Large-motor and outdoor play use an on-site playground, a full-size gym for inclement weather, and a courtyard and designated indoor space for infants and toddlers.
Field trips are offered for children over two, occasionally using public bus service; a Child Care Committee made up of parents and church members provides consultation and support to the Director.
The program supports inclusion of children with special needs, offers developmental screening options, and uses an online communication/notification system for parent messages.
