Overview

Gertrude B. Nielsen Child Care & Learning Center serves children from infancy through kindergarten and presents classroom programs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten-age children.

Approach and curriculum

The centre emphasizes relationship-based, play-focused learning and individualised instruction. Its curriculum draws on multiple early-childhood philosophies (including Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Piaget), is literacy-rich, play-based and project-oriented, and is aligned with the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Staff planning time and family/community partnerships are part of the programme model.

Facilities and classrooms

The facility includes classrooms for infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten, with features such as a lobby aviary and a freshwater aquarium.
Infant rooms have separate nap rooms and radiant floor heating.
Outdoor natural playscapes, trike paths and jungle-gyms are provided; an indoor mini-gym is available for large-group activities and days with inclement weather.
Classes are organised so children remain in their own room with their primary teachers throughout the day.

Meals, health and fitness

The centre uses an external catering program described as organic for breakfast, lunch and snacks, with an emphasis on whole grains, fruits and vegetables and vegetarian options.
Allergy action plans are established for children with known allergies and emergency medications are stored on site; staff training includes allergy and asthma awareness, CPR and First Aid.
Daily movement and fitness activities are incorporated into classroom routines to support motor development.
