Harvard Head Start

Overview

Harvard Head Start is a Head Start preschool center in Harvard, Illinois, serving children three to five years old as part of the Community Action Agency for McHenry County network. The center offers preschool programming with options for full-day attendance and transportation when available.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses a research-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum to support active learning across domains including language, math, science, social studies and art. Child progress is monitored with ongoing assessments aligned with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards.

Services for families, health and special needs

Full-day sessions (seven hours) for children ages 3–5 include daily meals and a snack under the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
Transportation by school bus is provided when possible; drivers and attendants undergo background checks and buses are equipped with five-point harness systems.
Family services include family partnership planning, parent education classes (Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors and The Incredible Years), parent committees and representation on the Policy Council.
Health and disability supports include developmental screenings within 45 days of enrollment, referrals and collaboration with school districts for children with disabilities, vision and hearing screenings, medical and dental resources, and access to mental-health consultation and family counseling services.
