Highland Free School

Overview

Highland Free School is a non-profit K–6 elementary charter school located in the Barrio San Antonio area of Tucson. The school has operated in the Tucson community since 1970 and accepts students from across the metropolitan area.

Approach and curriculum

The curriculum is aligned with the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards and emphasizes integrated, thematic units that use hands-on activities and projects. Instructional materials include Math and ELA curriculum maps and classroom use of technology and project-based learning methods.

Services, assessment and student supports

Student learning is assessed using multiple tools including teacher observation, quizzes, pre/post tests, STAR benchmark assessments, and state tests (AASA, AZSci where applicable).
Special education procedures and services are provided in accordance with IDEA; the school maintains policies and procedures for special education and child-find activities.
English language learner supports include individualized language plans (ILLPs), scheduled explicit English language development time, and mainstream classroom placement with documented accommodations.
