Is 141 Steinway (The)

Overview

I.S. 141 The Steinway is a public middle school serving students in grades 6 through 8. The school uses an academy structure to create smaller learning communities within the larger building.

Academy organization

6th and 7th graders are assigned to either the Albert Einstein Academy (AEA) or the William Shakespeare Academy (WSA).
8th graders are assigned to either the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Academy (RBG) or the Maya Angelou Academy (MAA).
Each academy is staffed with an assistant principal, a dean, and a guidance counselor.

Student supports and leadership

Administrative and student support roles identified on school pages include a principal and instructional cabinet, deans responsible for disciplinary matters, guidance counselors to support course and high school choices, licensed social workers, and a substance abuse prevention/intervention specialist.

Educational approach

Instructional materials and mission statements describe an emphasis on collaborative, inquiry-based learning, student engagement, culturally responsive classrooms, and attention to students’ social–emotional needs.
