Overview

Isabel Patterson Child Development Center is a child development program located on the CSULB campus that serves primarily student-parents and, as space permits, CSULB staff, faculty, alumni and community families. The center enrolls several hundred children each semester and offers developmentally appropriate early care and education from infancy through early elementary grades.

Approach and curriculum

The program emphasizes a child-centered, play-based approach and lists developmentally appropriate curriculum, staff development, parent education and involvement, community participation and referral services as core components. Goals include supporting children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth, fostering creative problem solving and self-confidence, and providing anti-bias education that values individual differences and cultural diversity.

Facilities and meals

Campus facility includes three separate children’s centers, a central office and an on-site kitchen, set on about two acres of play space with grassy hills, a children’s garden, play villages, sand and water play areas.
Meals are prepared on the premises without additives or preservatives; the meal program excludes soda, punch, candy, beef, pork and hot dogs, offers vegetarian alternatives when meat is served, and participates in the California Department of Education’s Adult and Childcare Food Program. Infant feeding is provided according to individual plans.

Licensing, capacity and staff

All facilities are inspected and licensed by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.
Licensed full-time-equivalent capacities listed on the site are: Infants/Toddlers 28 FTE, Preschoolers 100 FTE, School-age 40 FTE.
The center describes an organized staff-development program and reports a staff of trained teachers and program specialists; some staff hold advanced degrees and teaching permits.

Programs

Infant & Toddler Program

Program for children 6 months to 2 1/2 years, with infant and beginning-walker rooms limited to six children (adult-to-infant ratio 1:3) and younger/older toddler rooms limited to eight children (ratio 1:4).

Block Scheduling — Morning Session: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., Monday thru Friday; Afternoon Session: 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Thursday; Extended Care: 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., Friday; Full Day: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday thru Thursday. · 6 months - 2 years 6 months

Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grade Program

After-school program for children in kindergarten through second grade, with an adult-to-child ratio of 1:10. Afternoon sessions are offered and full-day care is available on public school days off when the center is open and staff are available.

Afternoon Session: 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Full Day Session: On public school days off (when IPCDC is open) Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; availability subject to staffing. · 5 years and up

Preschool Program

Preschool environment organized into younger and older development groups (Blue School and Purple School) with cross-aged groupings; Blue School (about 2 1/2 to 4 years) has an adult-to-child ratio of 1:7 and Purple School (older preschool to kindergarten) has an adult-to-child ratio of 1:8.
