Overview

La Playa Cooperative Nursery School is a nonprofit, parent‑participation preschool located in the Stone House at Lindberg Park in Culver City. The program enrolls children two to five years old, operates a school year that runs from mid‑August through mid‑June, and provides a summer camp program in June and July.

Approach and curriculum

The school uses a play‑based approach that emphasizes social‑emotional development, creativity, and hands‑on exploration. Teachers lead daily circle time and include movement, music, science, and art as part of classroom routines. The centre describes a conflict‑resolution approach built on Emotion Coaching, respectful co‑regulation, and Collaborative Problem Solving to teach emotional literacy and problem‑solving skills.

Facilities and family participation

Programs are based in indoor and outdoor spaces at the Stone House and Lindberg Park, with climbing structures, a sandbox, garden, bicycle/tricycle area, art spaces, block and dramatic play areas, reading nooks, and tactile/manipulative tables.
As a cooperative school, parent participation is an expectation: families volunteer on weekly workdays, participate in maintenance days, run snack weeks, serve on the Board or committees, attend parent education seminars, and help with fundraising. Financial aid recipients are expected to remain full participating members.
Teaching staff credentials are listed on staff profiles: the director holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and dance and a master’s degree in human development; other teachers include a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Child and Adolescent Development and staff with early‑childhood and music instruction experience.
