Los Angeles Family School

Overview

Los Angeles Family School is a progressive, non-profit, parent-participatory early childhood school established in 1972 in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. The school serves young children and describes an emergent approach to early childhood education.

Philosophy and curriculum

The program uses an emergent curriculum and developmentally appropriate practices that emphasize independence, social competence, problem-solving, peaceful conflict resolution, creativity, and individualized choices for children. The school explicitly values messy play and does not require children to be potty-trained on arrival.

Facilities

The school is organized into four classrooms (Treehouse, Rainforest, Hill and Riverbed). Each classroom is described as colorful and arranged with multiple activity areas, and each has an adjoining outdoor play area for year‑round outdoor play.

Family involvement and admissions

Parent participation is an expected part of school life; parents are encouraged to volunteer in roles ranging from classroom help to organizing fundraisers and driving on field trips.
Admissions include attending an online orientation; orientations are held monthly from September through March (on either the first or second Tuesday of the month).
