Martin Luther King Jr. Center

Overview

Martin Luther King Jr. Center is one of Felton Institute’s Early Care and Education centers in San Francisco and serves children aged 2–5 years. It is listed among Felton’s neighborhood centers that provide full‑day, year‑round early learning classrooms.

Approach and curriculum

The center follows a relationship‑based, primary care model and an inclusive approach that supports children with diverse needs. Educators implement a research‑based, play‑focused curriculum (including The Creative Curriculum for Infant, Toddler and Preschool) and use validated assessment tools aligned with California early education standards.

Learning experiences

Play‑based activities to support social, emotional, physical and cognitive development
Hands‑on experiences such as blocks and manipulative toys, dramatic play, books and reading, outdoor gross motor activities, art and science, water and sand play, group time, and music and movement

Family engagement, assessment and meals

Families are expected to participate in intake, conferences and other program activities as part of ongoing partnerships with staff. Developmental screening and assessment (including ASQ‑3 and ASQ‑SE) are used to monitor child progress and identify early intervention needs. Meals are prepared by a central kitchen and the program provides breakfast, a.m. snack, lunch and a p.m. snack.
