Mixed Greens Preschool

Overview

Mixed Greens Preschool is a mixed-age, play-based early childhood program in Santa Rosa serving young children ages 2–6. The program emphasizes outdoor learning and environmental awareness as part of its everyday work with children.

Approach and curriculum

The program follows a child-centered, constructivist and play-based approach to emergent curriculum with primary inspiration from the Reggio Emilia tradition and influences from Waldorf and Montessori practice. Learning is described as project- and interest-driven, with teachers facilitating inquiry, representation and social learning rather than delivering a pre-set academic endpoint.

Facilities, meals and activities

Regular use of outdoor spaces, a garden program and art studio; nature exploration and frequent field trips are part of the calendar.
Parents supply daily lunches; the program provides two daily snacks that are mostly organic and offers organic whole milk or nut milk and 100% juice (water available).
Seasonal events and parent education offerings are scheduled through the year.

Staff and safety

The program identifies a program director with state-level child development and program-director credentials and pediatric CPR/First Aid certification. The program holds an Eco-Healthy Child Care endorsement and lists membership in environmental education associations. Written policies cover illness exclusion, medication administration, emergency preparedness and pick-up/drop-off procedures.
