New York City Charter School of the Arts is a public charter middle school in Manhattan serving grades 6–8 that integrates music, visual and performance arts with academic subjects and social–emotional learning.
New York City Charter School of the Arts (CSA) serves students in grades 6–8 and frames middle school education around a combination of artistic, academic, and social–emotional learning. The program includes training in piano and music theory, visual arts, performance, and social activism as part of the regular curriculum.
Academic instruction covers Humanities, Math, and Science with explicit literacy instruction and preparation for state Regents exams in algebra and Living Environment. All 8th graders take Living Environment for high school credit, and some students take Algebra I during middle school. Arts instruction is integrated across the program; students participate in recitals, juried art shows, seasonal theater productions and musical performances. The school lists partnerships with local cultural organizations, including Black Gotham Experience, Theater for a New Audience, and New York Youth Orchestra.
Student supports include social–emotional programming, restorative approaches to conflict, and assignment of a trusted adult advocate for each student. Admissions are lottery-based as required by state law; there is no audition or portfolio requirement. The school gives first preference to district residents and may apply lawful preferences for students identified as at risk, including those eligible for free and reduced-price lunch and English language learners.
