Prairieland Montessori

Overview

Prairieland Montessori's Wicker Park campus provides Montessori-based early childhood education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The program emphasizes respect for each child and family, daily outdoor time and a prepared classroom environment appropriate to each stage of development.

Approach and curriculum

The curriculum follows Montessori methods with an emphasis on the whole child: intellectual, physical, social/emotional and community development. Classrooms use Montessori materials and multi-age groupings so children can work at their own pace. Staff perform periodic assessments of children’s progress and include music, yoga and movement as part of the program.

Programs

Red Winged Black Bird — infant classroom focused on nurturing, sensory and motor activities. (3 – 15 months)
Fox — toddler classroom introducing beginning Montessori materials, sensory and gross/fine motor activities and social skills. (15 – 36 months)
Bobcat — preschool/primary classroom using hands-on Montessori materials, extended work periods and mixed-age interactions to support mastery. (3 – 6 years)

Facilities, meals and health

The campus describes eco-friendly practices throughout the facility, including non-toxic finishes and cleaning supplies, natural-material classroom equipment, a library and a seasonal container garden. A fully fitted kitchen with Energy Star appliances is used to provide organic snacks, and an organic hot lunch is supplied daily by a locally sourced caterer. Organic linens are used for naps.
