Project N.O.W./Head Start

Overview

Project N.O.W. Head Start serves preschool-aged children from low-income families in Rock Island, Henry and Mercer counties, including a program site in Kewanee. Head Start services are provided at no cost to income-eligible families and are designed to support early learning, health, and family well-being.

Program options and services

Center-Based Program: Preschool classes five days a week; up to six-hour classes; weekly family support contacts from the Family Service Provider; three home visits per year with the teacher; two parent/teacher conferences per year; limited enrollment in classrooms within childcare centers that offer full day care and education; 9-month school year.
Home-Based Program: Weekly home visits with teacher, parent, and child for a minimum of 1½ hours; weekly planning of activities in partnership with parents and the teacher; weekly planning and review of family goals; opportunity for the child to attend a weekly 3½-hour classroom session; 9-month Program Year.
Health and developmental screenings include hearing, vision, developmental and social/emotional observations; physical and dental examinations are required to participate. Staff assist families in securing medical and dental treatments and in developing educational and family goals.
Bus transportation is available for many families who live more than one mile from Head Start centers.

Parent engagement and enrollment

Parents may participate in leadership roles through the Policy Council and parent meetings and are involved in setting goals and planning family supports.
Open enrollment takes place throughout the year, with children typically enrolled during June, July and August for the upcoming school year.
Programs operate in multiple communities including Silvis, East Moline, Moline, Colona and Kewanee.
