San Mateo Montessori

Overview

San Mateo Montessori is a preschool program licensed by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing. The school accepts children from 3 to 5½ years of age and requires children to be fully toilet trained prior to attendance.

Curriculum and approach

The program uses Montessori materials and activities to support individualized, hands-on learning across areas such as math, science, language, practical life and sensorial development. The curriculum includes focused study of geography and cultures, regular Spanish instruction, presentations of science topics, and group creative activities in the afternoons such as arts and crafts, music, storytelling, cooking, dance and yoga. Class sizes and staffing are arranged to allow individualized guidance.

On-site backyard with mature fruit trees, climbing structures, playhouses and turf and sand play areas.
Year-round vegetable and flower garden used as an outdoor classroom.
Patio picnic tables for outdoor lunches and social time.

Staff and licensing

Most teachers have long tenures at the school; staff members are college graduates and are certified as Montessori teachers and/or meet state early childhood education requirements. The program follows state-required forms and immunization documentation for enrollment.
