School For The Blind

Overview

North Dakota Vision Services / School for the Blind is a state agency located in Grand Forks that provides services to children and adults who are blind or have low vision. The organization offers center-based programming at its Grand Forks site and maintains regional outreach offices across the state.

Programs and instruction

Instruction emphasizes the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) and includes one-on-one lessons in areas such as braille, assistive technology, daily living skills, orientation and mobility, recreation/leisure, vocational skills, and adjustment to vision loss. Short-Term Programs (STPs) for designated age groups (elementary, middle, and high school) typically run 3–5 days and use a structured daily schedule of instructional blocks and social/recreational activities. An independent living program is offered for older students, with on-campus apartments used to practice grocery planning, meal preparation, and household management. Adult short-term programming is available with individualized goal-setting and instruction.

A demonstration Store that carries and demonstrates a selection of low-vision aids and equipment.
Residential accommodations for students during center-based programs (suites with shared bathrooms; bedding and linens provided) and separate arrangements for adults attending short-term programs.
Outreach services delivered by regional coordinators and vision rehabilitation specialists to support infants, school-age students, and adults in their homes, schools, and communities.
