Second Street Children's School

Overview

Second Street Children’s School is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit early childhood school that serves young children in Tucson. The program operates on a schedule that follows the Tucson Unified School District calendar and offers both half‑day and full‑day care on weekdays.

Educational approach

The school uses a play‑based approach with an emergent curriculum and an authentic assessment portfolio process to guide learning goals. Emphasis is placed on outdoor, nature‑based play, the arts, social and emotional development, family engagement, and opportunities for children to make choices and collaborate with peers.

Staff, community, and supports

Educators work in co‑teaching teams; morning program staff commonly hold bachelor's or master's degrees in early childhood/elementary education or related fields, or hold AA/CDA credentials with extensive experience.
Support and afternoon staff hold a minimum of a high school diploma and experience with young children; all faculty participate in at least 18 hours of continuing education annually.
The school is governed by a community board and offers several scholarship and financial assistance options funded in part through ongoing fundraising.
