Overview

Silverleaf Children’s Academy, West location, is a licensed educational childcare program for infants through preschool-age children. The center is one of three Silverleaf locations in central Illinois and is licensed to care for 56 children. The program accepts children with disabilities or special needs.

Curriculum and daily program

Classroom teachers prepare weekly, theme-based lesson plans and post daily schedules that include meals, indoor and outdoor play, and nap/rest time. Instruction includes Spanish and American Sign Language across infant through preschool classrooms. Literacy activities incorporate Jolly Phonics in toddler through preschool groups. Developmental assessments are completed at enrollment and twice each year in the infant, toddler, two-year-old and preschool programs; results are used for individualized planning.

Meals, reporting and communications

The center participates in the Child and Adult Care Food Program and serves menus that include organic milk, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Menus are planned in advance and made available to parents. A certified food service sanitation manager is on site during food preparation, and the food preparation facilities have been inspected by the state health authority. Daily reports and weekly lesson plans are provided to families, and a parent communication line is maintained for texts and picture messaging.

Health, safety and policies

Illness and exclusion follow state licensing standards; children are screened on arrival and parents are notified when symptoms require pick-up. Current physical and immunization records are required and must be kept up to date.
Field trips require signed parent permission and employees who transport children are cleared through the state child welfare agency.
Behavior guidance emphasizes prevention, positive reinforcement and redirection; procedures include verbal warnings, brief time-outs (no more than one minute per year of age) and parent notification for recurrent or severe issues. Corporal punishment and other prohibited disciplinary practices are not permitted.
Closures for extreme weather or emergencies are announced through center communications and local media.
