St. John's Nursery School

Overview

St. John's Nursery School is a non-denominational, EEC-licensed preschool in Westwood that serves three- and four-year-old children. The school is a nonprofit that has operated continuously in the community since 1972 and is governed by a volunteer parent board.

Educational approach and curriculum

The program focuses on social, emotional, cognitive and physical development and provides opportunities for large-group, small-group, one-on-one and independent work. The curriculum follows Massachusetts State Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Pre-K. Subject areas listed include literacy, science, math, social/emotional development, health education, arts/music and technology. A theme-based approach is used, with seasonal and topic themes that guide classroom activities.

Staff and enrichment

Teaching staff hold college degrees and are certified in CPR and First Aid.
The school reports a student–teacher ratio of 5:1 and uses small-group and individual instruction.
Enrichment is provided by specialists in music, movement, science and literacy; the school also has a full-time Literacy Specialist and regular visits from the local librarian.

Families and community

Families are invited to participate through parent representatives, fundraising coordinators, classroom volunteering and other committees. The school lists opportunities for donations and classroom readers as ways families can help.
