Step By Step Child Care/Morris

Overview

The Morris location opened in 2002 and moved into a purpose-built facility in 2008. The centre has nine classrooms and a licensed capacity for 149 full-time children, accepting both full- and part-time enrolment. The Morris site also offers a Head Start preschool program.

Educational approach

The program emphasises learning through experience and repetition, using classroom learning centres and opportunities for choice and problem solving rather than product-focused lessons. Daily routines include group times, choice time, and small-group activities intended to support social skills, decision-making and self-help development.

Programs and services

Infants and Toddlers: Small-group and individual routines are used to support emotional security, independence and emerging social skills.
Preschool: Morning preschool classes are available, with the option to attend 2–5 days per week; the Morris location offers a Head Start preschool program.
School-age care: Before- and after-school care is provided, along with full-day options on school holidays and during summer breaks; activities include homework help, outdoor play and choice of interest areas.
Meals and nutrition: Participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program; centres serve breakfast, lunch and morning and afternoon snacks that follow state nutritional guidelines. Infant feeding includes formula, cereal and baby food as appropriate.

Facilities and staffing

The centre reports accredited status through NAC and recognition in the Illinois ExceleRate program. Staff development, classroom-based supervision and routines for arrivals, departures and bodily care are part of daily practice.
