Overview

Del Mar Hills Nursery School is a long-established early childhood program in Del Mar that serves children from approximately 2½ years through age six. The school is licensed for 60 children and frames its work around social, emotional, physical, creative and cognitive development through play.

Approach and curriculum

The program uses a play-based, whole-child approach and incorporates multiple early-childhood philosophies, including Reggio Emilia, Froebel, Montessori influences, and Orff Schulwerk music pedagogy. Teachers document children’s learning, follow emergent projects, and provide activities intended to support development across language, concept, mathematical, literacy, social/emotional, and motor domains.

Facilities and outdoor learning

Classroom spaces include specialized rooms such as an Art Studio and a Froebel Room.
An Outdoor Learning Environment features a garden, a natural sandbox and a water wall designed to engage children’s senses and support motor, social and cognitive development.

Enrollment and policies

Admission requires a tour and observation with school leadership, completion of enrollment paperwork, and payment of enrollment fees. The school requires children to be toilet trained before starting; limited exceptions (pull-ups only during nap) are noted. Re-enrollment for current families occurs in January for the following school year.
