The UC Merced Early Childhood Education Center offers early childhood education and care for children from six weeks through five years in a developmentally focused setting. The program serves families affiliated with UC Merced and members of the surrounding community.
Instruction is play-based and built around children’s interests, with an emphasis on developmentally appropriate activities and continuity of care. Teachers are described as degreed and credentialed and use a primary-caregiver model. Curriculum and assessment incorporate the Desired Results and the California Infant/Toddler and Preschool Learning Foundations and Frameworks, and the program practices Conscious Discipline.
Priority is given to siblings of enrolled families and to UC Merced–affiliated families; community families are admitted after affiliated waiting lists are exhausted. The center accepts county subsidy payments (ACCESS) and other subsidy funding options. A waiting list application and an application fee are used to establish enrollment priority.
Infant care uses a primary-caregiver model with individualized routines and caregiving rituals; teachers plan activities that support sensorimotor development and document children’s learning for families.
Preschool classrooms focus on skills that support transition to kindergarten (routines, social interaction, early math and language) with curriculum based on developmental domains, children’s interests, and California preschool foundations; learning is documented and shared with families.
Toddler classrooms are arranged for exploration and discovery, emphasize routines such as dressing and toilet learning, and use an interactive planning and documentation process that draws on California infant/toddler learning foundations.
