What is a nanny?

A nanny is employed by one family and works in that family's home, so this is an employment relationship rather than an enrollment. It offers the most flexibility over hours and routine and the least outside oversight: no license, no inspection, and no second adult in the room. Families usually take on the responsibilities of an employer, which in most states includes payroll, tax and insurance.

What to ask before you enroll

  • Run a background check yourself, and take references by speaking to the families rather than reading letters.
  • Agree hours, duties, vacation, sick leave and notice in writing before the first day.
  • Check what your state asks of a household employer for payroll, tax and workers' compensation.
  • Ask about first aid and CPR certification, and when it was last renewed.
  • Agree what happens when the nanny is sick, since there is no second caregiver to fall back on.
