What is a school-age program?

School-age programs are built around the school day rather than replacing it: before school, after school, and full days when school is closed. Some run on the school site and some are run by a center that collects children by bus, and that difference decides how much of your day the handover costs. Programs for older children lean more on activities and homework time than on care routines.

What to ask before you enroll

  • Ask how children get from school to the program, and who is responsible during the journey.
  • Ask what the program does on early-release days, teacher days and the weeks school is closed.
  • Ask what the ratio is for the older age groups, which is usually different from the younger ones.
  • Ask how homework, screen time and outdoor time are handled.
  • Check whether you can book set days or have to take the full week.
